Cricket is making its long-awaited return to the Olympic Games at LA28, and the ICC and IOC have now locked in exactly how teams will qualify. Here's everything you need to know about the format, the qualification pathway, and who's already booked their spot.
Cricket at LA28: The Basics
Cricket returns to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, when it makes its comeback at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, running July 12–29, 2028. The competition will be played in the T20 format, with both a men's and a women's tournament.

How Qualification Works: The 5+1 System
Out of the six spots in each tournament, the pathway splits into two parts:
1. Five Spots via Rankings & Existing ICC Events
Four of these five spots are guaranteed by continental representation — one team each from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania — based on ICC rankings and results from existing ICC tournaments under the regular Future Tour Programme structure.
The fifth spot is reserved for the host nation, USA, but it isn't automatic. USA must finish in the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31, 2026. If USA fails to meet that bar, this spot instead goes to the highest-ranked non-qualified team globally.
2. One Spot via the ICC Olympics Qualifier (New Event)
The sixth and final spot in both the men's and women's events will be decided by a brand-new event: the ICC Olympics Qualifier, scheduled for 2027. It will feature 8 teams — made up of the next-highest-ranked teams in the relevant ICC rankings, excluding anyone who's already qualified directly.
Women's Tournament: Who's Already Qualified
Thanks to the ongoing 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup, four of the six women's spots are already locked in based on continental rankings:

The qualification ranking window for the women's event closes on March 1, 2027, which will determine the eight teams competing in the ICC Olympics Qualifier for the final spot.
Men's Tournament: Race Still Wide Open
Unlike the women's side, no men's team has qualified yet. The four continental spots will be decided based on the ICC Men's T20I rankings as of December 31, 2026 — so the rest of this year is effectively a live qualification race. The remaining men's spot follows the same ICC Olympics Qualifier route in 2027.
The West Indies Exception
This is one of the more unusual rules: the West Indies are not eligible to claim an Olympic quota place directly. Since the West Indies team represents multiple Caribbean nations rather than a single National Olympic Committee (NOC), the IOC doesn't recognize it as Olympic-eligible.
However, if West Indies rank among the top 8 unqualified teams as of December 31, 2026, the ICC will hold a special Caribbean Qualifier to determine which individual Caribbean nation (e.g., Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago) represents the region at the ICC Olympics Qualifier.
Great Britain's Olympic Team
Since England, Ireland, and the West Indies don't map directly to single NOCs, Great Britain will compete as a combined team for cricket at LA28 — similar to GB teams in other sports. Only England's results count toward GB's qualification quota, and notably, Great Britain are the reigning Olympic champions, having won the only previous Olympic cricket event back in 1900.
